Liposuction

Liposuction

Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes excess fat from the body in order to slim and contour the area. It is also known as lipo, lipoplasty or body contouring. Sometimes, it gets difficult to remove stubborn body fat despite our best efforts at exercising and dieting. This is when liposuction comes into play. With liposuction it is possible to remove fat from thighs, upper arms, buttocks, inner knee, abdomen, back, chest area, cheeks, chin or neck area. It can be performed alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures like abdominoplasty, facelifts or breast augmentation.

Facts:

  • Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure; it just removes fat from specific area of body.
  • Liposuction does not remove cellulite or stretch marks.
  • Liposuction helps to shed fat that exercise and diet can’t.

Who is a good candidate for Liposuction?

To be an ideal candidate for liposuction, one needs to be in good health. Candidate should be- * Close to or at a healthy weight with a BMI less than 30 * Non smoker * On a healthy diet

How is it performed?

Liposuction procedure can last for 1 or 2 hours. Before starting the procedure, your doctor might mark the areas that are going to be treated. Liposuction is carried out under anesthesia. Depending on the area of surgery, your doctor will provide you suitable anesthetic. It could be Local anesthetic that numbs the area to be treated or General anesthetic that keeps you unconscious during the entire procedure. Once anesthesia is given, you surgeon will start the process using any of the under mentioned technique.

Traditional (dry) liposuction

Once anesthesia is applied, your surgeon will start the process by making small incisions in the skin. Then a long, hollow tube called cannula is inserted through the incisions to break apart the fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The fat is then suctioned out using a vacuum that is attached to the suction.

Tumescent (wet) Liposuction

This technique involves injecting a large amount of “tumescent” solution into the treatment area to minimize bleeding and discomfort during the procedure. Solution contains the mixture of lidocaine, epinephrine and saline.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

This technique uses ultrasonic vibrations to break fatty tissues and loosen it from surrounding tissues. It allows the easier removal of fat from dense areas of the body such as upper back, chin or knees.

Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

This technique uses laser energy to dislodge fat cells. After liquefaction, fat cells are drained out using small tubes.

Risks

Like every surgery has some risks, liposuction also comes with few risks. This includes bleeding, bruising, infection, contour irregularities, fluid accumulation or necrosis.
