Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a surgery that helps you lose weight. It treats obesity in people for whom measures such as diet, exercise and medication alone are not enough. It should only be considered after trying to lose weight through a healthy diet and exercise. Bariatric surgery causes weight loss by restricting the amount of food your stomach can hold. It will either shrink the stomach so that the patient can only eat small amounts of food at a time or will change the way that the digestive system can absorb the food the patient eats. Bariatric surgery improves the patient’s quality of life.

BMI is a very common way to measure body fat. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilogram by the square of their height in meters. In adults the normal BMI range is 18.5- 24.9. Individuals who fall below the range of 18.5 are referred as underweight and above the range of 25 are called overweight. Those who range from 30-39.9 are called obese.
